Description
This is a poster I am going to present at the annual meeting of the Biophysical Society 2010 in San Francisco where 6000 scientists from around the world take part. [link]
For this year's poster I wanted to do something entirely different. Here are some typical poster designs: [link]
Recently I came across the work of Chad Hagen, I especially love his nonsensical Infographics and Analog Controls series: [link]
For some reason their Fifties (or is it Sixties? I am too young) look reminds me of my childhood in Eastern Germany.
The poster took me about two days to make (just the poster, not the research - that would be two years) and I am quite happy in general, though there is a bit too much text and I did not have the time to adjust the colors properly. (I had a certain color scheme in mind.)
Thanks a lot to Jay Hilgert [link] for providing the grunge texture I used as background!
Initially I planned to take part in the poster competition but I missed the deadline.

A while ago, I analyzed this poster on my blog (ruben.verborgh.org/blog/2013/0….
While I don't really comment on the aesthetics, I argue that this poster is not more effective than ordinary—perhaps less attractive—posters. In particular, the design doesn't help to solve the crucial communication questions such as: what is this poster actually about?
I think design should foremost help with the communicative process (especially for scientific posters); aesthetics are secondary.
